September Arrived
Notes on the Threshold Between Seasons
September Arrived
9.3.25
September arrived
As a single sycamore leaf on the porch
And maple leaves
Like ticker tape
Dancing on the asphalt
September arrived
As goldenrod and milkweed lighting the meadows aflame
And the iron weed parading
Like royalty through the blazing beauty
September arrived
As cicada rhythm winding down
and tree frogs and crickets lending their song
To the eastern screech owls
Whinnying horse-like at midnight
September arrived
As apples ripening on the trees
And the once nectar-giving zinnias
now gone to seed to feed the goldfinches
flying south too soon
September arrived
As a telegram from the breeze to the leaves
And said the forest floor’s open
Please wear your most outrageous colors
While fluttering to the ground
September arrived
As a remembrance of the truth of us
And a flash of our brilliance
Caught in the golden hour light
I hope from wherever you are reading that the threshold between summer and fall stirs you and gives pause to soak it in.
Thank you for reading!
With Love,
Amanda
